About the Red King Crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus)
The Red King Crab is a crustacean found off the shores of Alaska. The king crab has five sets of legs, the first pair being the claws, the right claw is normally larger than the left, the next three legs are walking legs, and the last pair of legs are special legs that are tucked underneath the carapace and in females are used to clean their fertilized eggs. In contrast, males use them to transfer sperm to the female. The carapace (the shell on their back) can grow up to 11 inches wide, while the legs can span 5 feet wide! You can tell the difference between males and females by their abdominal flap, the males featuring narrow flaps and the females featuring wider flaps. The king crab is not only eaten by humans but also by cod, sculpins, halibut, yellowfin sole, octopus, sea otters, and even other king crabs! Other types of crabs related to the red king crab are blue king crab and golden king crab.
