About the Black-tailed Prairie Dog (Cynomys ludovicianus)
The Black-tailed prairie dog is native to the great plains of the midwestern United States, stretching up to Canada and down into Mexico. This particular prairie dog is believed to be the most abundant prairie dog in terms of population in North America. They are tannish with a white belly, and their tail is tipped with black hairs, hence the name. On average, they grow to 15in long and can weigh 2-3 pounds. These little rodents can make dens and travel corridors up to 15 feet deep.
