About the Bobwhite Quail (Colinus virginianus)
The bobwhite quail (also known as the northern or Virginia quail) is a ground-dwelling bird native to North America. Surprisingly, the bobwhite gets its name from its call, not from the white feather coloration on its head. The bobwhite typically sports a salt and pepper chest, with a rich chestnut-red or orange feathering along its wings and back. The bobwhite, like most quail, is a very popular game bird, and are actively hunted all over the U.S. Their diet consists of seeds, insects, and flowering vegetation.
