About the Burbot (Lota lota)
This species is found distributed above the 40 N latitude, meaning it is a circumpolar species of fish. This fish is unique in that its body shape is similar to that of an eel. The distinguishing factor of this species, however, is the single barbel (beard) on the chin. In fact, the name burbot derives from the Latin word Barba meaning beard. Burbot reaches sexual maturity or breeding age between the ages of 4 and seven years.
