About the American Toad (Anaxyrus americanus)
The American toad is native to almost every backyard in North America. These toads thrive off of small insects and worms they find through various foraging opportunities. They reside in dark and moist environments, such as under large rocks or downed woody debris. They are covered in brown wart-like structures, often a darker brown phase than the toad’s normal skin. The large bulge on either side of the toad’s head is its paranoid gland, where it secretes toxins as a defense mechanism.
