About the Yellow-Billed Hornbill (Tockus leucomelas)

The southern yellow-billed hornbill is native to the acacia woodlands of southern Africa. This bird can be distinguished by its very large yellow downward curved beak. A fun fact about this bird is that it is the bird that represented Zazu in Disney’s The Lion King. These birds have an unusual mutualistic relationship with dwarf mongoose where the yellow-billed hornbill will eat the mongoose’s scraps and, in return, warn the mongoose of predators using vocalizations.
