About the Willow Ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus)

Found throughout the tundra of North America, the Willow Ptarmigan is a beautiful gamebird that somewhat resembles a chicken. Their winter plummage is striking, with most of their winter plumage turning snow-white, which aids in camouflage from predators during winter months. The chest of the Willow is often a deep auburn red and brown. The face of the willow is typically this same dark auburn or black, with an accent of white over the head and a striking bright red highlight under each marble eye. During the summer, the willow’s plummage almost entirely changes to a light brown to better blend in with the snowless environment. The Willow is most often distinguished from the Rock Ptarmigan by the lack of black coloration between the eye and beak and slightly larger body size.
