About the Thirteen-Lined Ground Squirrel (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus)

The Thirteen-lined ground squirrel is native to the grasslands across North America, where it makes networks of burrows underground. These burrows can be upwards of 20 feet in total length, with multiple escape routes found throughout the system. The species gets its name from the 13 alternating sets of lines running the length of its body. Thirteen-lined ground squirrels grow to an average length of 9in and weigh around 6oz. They will feed on anything from grass seeds to small insects, such as grasshoppers or crickets.
