About the Snowshoe Hare (Lepus americanus)
The snowshoe hare (Snowshoe Rabbit) can be found throughout North America. The Snowshoe Hare has large hind feet that help it move across the top of the snow with an extra layer of hair/fur to help keep them warm. Their large feet help prevent them from sinking into the deep snow during the winter months, similar to the function of a snowshoe, for which it gets its namesake. The Snowshoe Hare also has a unique ‘camouflage system,’ with its fur turning white during the winter months and grey/brown during the summer months to help blend in with its surroundings. Its diet includes grass and leaves, with twigs, bark, and buds rounding out the remainder of its diet in the winter. The Snowshoe is mainly active at night but can be found moving around during daylight hours as well.
