About the Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa umbellus)

The Ruffed Grouse medium-sized, non-migratory bird found throughout North America. Its range stretches across the northern states of the U.S. into Canada and up through Alaska. Both males and females have ‘ruffs’ on the side of their necks (for which they are named) as well as a crest on their head. Males have a dark-colored tail band that is most often continuous, while females bands often are broken. Their habitat consists of woodlands and forests, with dense patches of aspen particularly preferred.
