About the Sitka Blacktail Deer (Odocoileus hemionus sitkensis)
The Sitka Blacktail Deer is a subspecies of the Mule Deer and is similar to the Columbian blacktail deer. The Sitka blacktail deer is found in coastal areas of northern British Columbia and southeastern Alaska. Typical Sitka blacktail deer weigh between 100 and 198 pounds. Males (or bucks) have antlers to fight during mating season to determine which buck is dominant and gets to breed. They eat green vegetation, but during the cold winter months, they also feed on woody vegetation. Sitka blacktail deer are smaller than Columbian blacktail deer.
