About the Short Nose Gar (Lepisosteus platostomus)
The Shortnose Gar is considered a rough freshwater fish native to the Mississippi and Missouri River channels of North America. This species selects for calm waters or backwaters of large rivers or tributaries. This fish grows to an average of 2 feet and gets its name rough fish from its armored ganoid scales that cover the length of its slender body. They have a feeding behavior that some may consider lazy they simply sit still and wait for something to swim by them and use their short burst speed ability to grab the prey quickly. This ability is done through a large caudal fin coupled with a close-by dorsal and ventral fin above the other.
