About the Sand Shark (Carcharias taurus)
The sand shark is a member of the Odontaspididae family and is found worldwide in temperate and tropical waters. They get the name sand shark because they are often the sharks you see while swimming at a beach in the shallow waters where they do most of their feeding. This species often has a brown shaded dorsal region with a white ventral underside. They have needle-like teeth adapted for impaling and holding on to their primary food source, fish. The sand sharks can grow upwards of 10 feet and weigh nearly 450 lbs at their full adult stage.
