About the Giant Panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca)

The Giant Panda is native to the dense bamboo forests of central China in relatively high altitudes of 7,500 feet. These beautiful animals are beloved for their shiny black and white coat and their friendly behavior. Giant Pandas have extremely slow reproduction rates, putting them at high risk for natural threats and extinction. The Latin name for this species means black and white cat-footed animal. Males can grow to an average of 5 feet from nose to tail and weigh upwards of 350 lbs, while females are a bit smaller and only grow to about 250lbs. Between bamboo and vegetative leaves, pandas do not eat much else. In fact, those two things make up nearly 99% of its diet.
