    About the Orangutan (Pongo)

The Orangutan is one of the three extant species of great apes left in the world and can only be found in Borneo and Sumatra rainforests. They can be easily distinguished from the 2 other species by their reddish-orange hair. They are also the most arboreal or tree-dwelling of the three species. Males and females differ when it comes to appearance. In males, especially dominant will develop large cheek pads used for vocalizations. Orangutans, interestingly enough, will make their own beds every night before going to bed. This is a nest constructed of branches, woody, debris, and leaves. Their name is derived from the Malaysian language, the orang meaning human and hutan meaning forest (person of the forest).
