About the Red Hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus caama)
The Red Hartebeest is native to Africa and is the most colorful of the hartebeest family, with dark markings contrasting against its white stomach and rear. Compared to other subspecies, it has a longer face with unique and complex curving horns. Male hartebeest can weigh over 300 lbs with an average shoulder height of over 60β³ and horns measuring over 20β³ in length. Hartebeests have both an excellent sense of smell and hearing, though their sense of sight is often quite poor. When frightened, hartebeests can reach speeds of over 30 mph running in zigzag patterns, making it difficult for predators such as lions to catch them. Red hartebeests are grazers with diets that fluctuate seasonally and only need to drink water in the dry season when moist grasses cannot be found.
