Animal Description

About the Cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus)

The cockatiel is a member of the cockatoo family native and endemic to the island of Australia. Endemic means they are exclusively found here, which begs how and why they are isolated to just Australia. The crest or head feathers of this species are a signaling mechanism of their senses. The crest is erect when the bird is excited or startled and is resting when it is angered or in a defensive state. Unlike most members of the cockatoo family, this particular bird has substantially longer tail feathers making up half its total body length.
