    Animal Description

About the North American Muskox (Ovibos moschatus)

The Muskox can be found in Canada’s frozen Arctic and northernmost reaches, where they graze the tundra in herds of 12-24 members. This very large member of the bovine family can grow to over 1000 lbs searching for lichens, roots, grasses, and moss for nutrients. The muskox prefers to dine on Arctic flowers and grasses during the summer months, preferably near a clean water source. The muskox is almost prehistoric in appearance, as hairy as a wooly mammoth, with a dark brown coat and massive sandy yellow horns growing downward away from the head and curling back up near the tip. It’s hard to spot their heads in all that fur, but their distinctive white mouth stands out for easy identification!
