About the Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos)
The Mallard is an iconic dabbling duck (puddle duck) found throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia, and even North Africa. Mallards are a mid-sized duck species that weigh an average of 3 pounds and can grow to a wingspan of nearly 40 inches. Mallards are also migratory ducks that travel to the northern hemisphere for breeding and the southern hemisphere to avoid the harsh northern winters. The drakes have beautiful iridescent green heads with an orange beak and predominantly grey body feathers. The females have white accents on striking brown bodies, helping them to remain camouflaged while protecting their young. Captive Bred Mallards may exhibit various colors, including green, speckled, mottled, and pure white. Mallards have a life expectancy of up to twelve years.
