About the Lesser Scaup (Aythya affinis)
The Lesser Scaup is one of the most abundant diving ducks in North America and is found primarily in the western united states during the breeding season. Their wintering grounds are found all along the southern coast. Diving ducks will feed on the bottom for mollusks, crustaceans, and other small invertebrates. Diving ducks typically prefer depths of 6 to 10 feet but will also be found in shallower waters feeding alongside dabbling ducks. The Lesser Scaup has a blue bill, goldeneye, and an otherwise black and white body.
