About the Greater Sage Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus)
The Sage Grouse is the largest member of the grouse family in North America. Its preferred range includes sagebrush (where it gets its namesake) in the western United States and southwestern Canada. Adult Sage Grouse has a long, pointed tail and legs covered with feathers all the way to their toes. Adult males have a yellow-colored patch over the eye, a grayish back color, a white breast, a dark brown throat, and a black belly. Sage Grouse males also have a unique set of two yellowish sacs on the neck that can be inflated during mating season to attract a female mate. Adult female sage grouse are often mottled gray-brown in color with a light brown throat and dark-colored underbelly.
