About the Fox Squirrel (Sciurus niger)

The Fox Squirrel (also know as the Eastern Fox Squirrel) is slightly larger than the Grey squirrel and larger than both the Red Squirrel and Chipmunk. It is one of the few mammals in the world that can climb down a tree headfirst by rotating its rear feet backward and digging in its claws to prevent slipping. It can grow to over 12 inches long, with a large bushy tail nearly the same length as its body. The Fox squirrel likes to hoard its food into many hidden groups, where it can be retrieved days or even months later to be eaten.
