About the Bowfin (Amia calva)
The bowfin is a medium-sized, tubular-shaped fish found in large lakes and slow streams through the US and Canada. Their typical habitats are murky, oxygen depleted water, which they survive by rising to the surface and swallowing air into their ‘air bladders’. The bowfin is often considered a ‘rough fish’, is usually olive or green in color, and has a dorsal fin that extends nearly the entire length of it’s back.
