Animal Description

About the Black Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis)

The Black squirrel is a melanistic grey or fox squirrel native to the midwestern portion of the United States. This is not to be confused as an entirely different species or even subspecies. However, it’s not to say that it is as commonly seen. This color phase is rarer and thus often admired and sought after for wildlife photographers. Interestingly enough, the dark pigmentation served as a naturally selected trait back when the United States was covered in heavy deciduous forests. This meant very little sunlight breaching the canopy and thus allowed the black squirrels to hide better from their avian predators.
