About the Black-Backed Jackal (Canis mesomelas)
The slender black-backed jackal is a long-legged, medium-sized canine with a pointed, fox-like muzzle and can be found throughout the plains and plateau areas of southern and eastern Africa. Its name derives from the dark silver marking along its back, where the rest of its body is typically a reddish-tan color. Black-backed jackals are omnivores and feed primarily on insects and small mammals they find near the network of tunnels they dig around their dens.
