About the American Paddlefish (Polyodon spathula)

The American Paddlefish is found primarily in the Mississippi River Basin, stretching out to smaller river basins as it moves southward towards the gulf. These prehistoric fish can grow up to nearly 10 feet and weigh upwards of 300lbs. These fish have been documented through fossil records as far back as 400 million years! The paddlefish is easily distinguished by its long paddle rostrum stretching out over its mouth. As juveniles, they can grow upwards of one inch per week and, as a species, can live up to 50 years in age. Paddlefish are filter feeders meaning they swim with their mouth open feeding on phytoplankton and other small aquatic invertebrates.
