About the Steinbok (Raphicerus campestris)
The Steinbok (or Steenbok) is a small antelope commonly found throughout the eastern and southern regions of Africa. They are typically brown and tan with shades of dark orange on their backs and cream-colored on the underbelly. Males have smooth, straight horns that typically run parallel to each other. The Steinbok’s habitat is often woodlands and thickets with the ability to live in semi-arid desert edges. Their diet includes low-level browse on vegetation and fruits while also digging up roots and bulbs to eat. Steinboks have the unique ability to utilize the water found in the browse they eat to meet their hydration requirements, allowing them to go without water for an entire season or longer if necessary.
