Animal Description

About the African Rock Python (Python sebae)

The African Rock Python is a non-venomous snake found in Africa. It is Africa’s largest snake and one of the six largest snakes globally, growing up to 20 feet in length. They are found in forests and deserts but normally near water. During the dry season, the rock python actually becomes dormant. Since it is not venomous, it relies on constriction and can eat animals up to crocodiles in size. Unlike most snake species, the female will protect her nest and sometimes her young once they hatch. There have been very few reported attacks on humans by the rock python, the latest coming back in 2017 when an 8-foot python killed his owner in England. The snake is widely feared but rarely ever kills humans. They are not recommended as pets since they are so unpredictable. The rock python is an invasive species in the Florida Everglades and can be hunted as they would like to eradicate them.
