About the Common Eland (Taurotragus oryx oryx)
The Cape Eland is native to the southernmost half of Africa and is technically listed as the largest species in the antelope family. The eland has a black mane that flows along the back of its neck and a thick coat that is tan in color, often greying along the shoulders as the animal matures. Both the male and female eland grow horns at the back of the head that rises with a slight twist at the tip. Males tend to be larger in size, grow larger horns, and grow a large fold of loose skin that hangs beneath the neck, dubbed the ‘dewlap.’
