About the Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka)
The Sockeye Salmon (also known as the “Red Salmon”) is a salmon species typically found in the northern Pacific Ocean, as well as the brackish rivers and inlets where the sockeye travels to spawn and eventually die. Once it’s young have grown big enough, they travel from the freshwater rivers back to the saltwater of the Pacific, where they grow up to 80 cm in length. Their color while in the Pacific is generally a silver-grey, but they turn deep red, with green heads, when they travel to the rivers to spawn.
