About the Chain Pickerel (Esox niger)
The Chain pickerel is a member of the Esocidae family and is native to the eastern coast of North America, stretching from Canada to Florida. A lot like a pike, the pickerel is an opportunistic feeder, meaning it feeds on whatever it can get its mouth around. They often are feeding on small fish unless they are presented with the opportunity to feed on a lost mouse or frog making the trek along the coasts of the shore. With a similar feeding pattern, one would think they would grow to as large as the Northern Pike; however, this is not true. A pickerel will rarely exceed 30 inches in total length, whereas a Northern Pike will reach upwards of 50 inches.
