About the Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

The Rainbow Trout is similar in general shape to the salmon, though its coloration is different. The trout’s dorsal area is often a dark olive in color, blending into a red or orange stripe extending from the gills to the tail which blends to a cream color on the belly. Both the top and sides of the trout are covered in a black or dark brown ‘flecking’. Rainbow trout average between 1 and 5 lbs when found in streams, while lake-dwelling trout may reach upwards of 20 lbs. Coloration may vary considerably based on subspecies as well as habitat.
