About the Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta)
The Painted Turtle is the most widely distributed turtle in North America. This reptile is easily distinguished by the mosaic-like ventral side of its shell. They have yellow stripes running the length of their extremities, including their head, legs, and tail. Because this is a reptile, it needs to thermoregulate and can often be sunbathing on logs or roadsides to raise its body temperature mechanically. Like most turtles, it eats aquatic vegetation, algae, small insects, and other macroinvertebrates. This turtle species can grow up to 10 in, but on average, they are more like 6-7 inches.
