About the Atlantic Tarpon (Megalops atlanticus)
The Atlantic Tarpon can be found on the west Atlantic coast from Virginia to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. Tarpon is a species of herring, of which they are the largest member. Tarpons can be found in saltwater and freshwater rivers to access freshwater marsh areas. They can survive in brackish water, waters of varying pH, and other extreme habitats with low dissolved oxygen content due to their swim bladders, which can assist them in breathing. They can also take gulps of air when surfacing, which gives them a temporary burst of energy. Tarpons can reach 8 feet in length and weigh upwards of 250 lbs. Tarpons possess distinctive lateral lines and have shiny, silvery scales that cover most of their bodies with a green/blue colored shimmering back. Tarpons have large eyes and wide mouths with a prominent lower jaw that juts out further than the upper portion of the head.
