About the Blue Arctic Fox (Vulpes lagopus)
The Blue Fox is a coloration variation of an Arctic Fox. While not considered rare, the slate blue coloration is not as commonly seen, and is the result of a recessive gene expression. The Arctic fox is found in the cold Arctic Tundras surrounding the north pole. It has a thick, white coat in the winter to blend well with the snow for camouflage that changes to brown in the summer once the snow has melted. They often hunt for small squirrels, lemmings and voles, while also eating fish, bird eggs and various sweet berries. The Arctic fox has the ability to keep warm in the extremely cold winter months by utilizing a unique ‘countercurrent’ blood circulation that helps them retain a warm body temperature.
