About the California Quail (Callipepla californica)

The California quail is a small, ground-dwelling bird found all over the western coast of the United States and the southwestern tip of Canada. The quail can more specifically be found in California, where it has officially been dubbed the state bird, and from where it gets its namesake. The California quail can be identified by the curving plume of six black or brown feathers, which droops forward over the front of the bird’s head. Both female and immature birds are generally grey-brown in color, while the male has a stark black face, brown back, grey-blue chest, and a light brown belly.
