Animal Description

About the Pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus)

The pumpkinseed is a member of the sunfish family native to the freshwaters of North America. The Pumpkinseed is similar in size to the Bluegill but has a more mosaic color pattern. The fish has a red marking on its opercular plate and has a rust-colored spotted body pattern. The spotted pattern can vary from olive-green to vibrant blue. Like most sunfish, Pumpkinseeds feed on macroinvertebrates, minnows, worms, and other small crustaceans. This is often among the first fish people will learn to fish on because of its ease of catching.
