About the Piranha (Serrasalmus rhombeus)

The piranha is a freshwater member of the Characidae family native to the South American rivers, lakes, and floodplains. They are most abundant in fast rapids of the rivers of the Amazon, where opportunities to feed are very high. This species is the largest of the piranha family, going up to 18 inches in length. Like most piranha’s, they have a sleek compressed body, with short, powerful jaws filled with razor-sharp teeth. This particular species of piranha are almost entirely carnivorous, unlike some other members of the family who will also feed on plant matter. ​
