About the Grey Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis)
The Grey Squirrel (also know as the Eastern Gray Squirrel) is slightly smaller than the Fox squirrel and larger than both the Red Squirrel and Chipmunk. It is one of the few mammals in the world that can climb down a tree head first by rotating its rear feet backwards and digging in its claws to prevent slipping. It can grow up to 12 inches long, with a large bushy tail nearly the same length as its body. The Grey squirrel likes to hoard its food into many hidden groups, where it can be retrieved days or even months later to be eaten.
