About the Warmouth (Lepomis gulosus)
The Warmouth is native and found throughout the eastern United States. They are most abundant in the Mississippi Drainage basin near the Gulf of Mexico. This is freshwater species characterized by its dark mottled brown coloring with a golden belly. These fish are a member of the sunfish family Centrarchidae and resemble that in their size. They are on average 4-10 inches and can weigh up to 2 lbs. They are primarily aquatic insectivores but also feed on crayfish and even some smaller fish species.
