    About the Gerenuk (Litocranius walleri)

The Gerenuk is a long-necked species of antelope often found throughout Eastern Africa. Their hair coloration is often brown on top with a creamy colored underbelly and a black-tipped tail. The male will weigh nearly 100 lbs, with females reaching just over 60 lbs. Gerenuks prefer a diet of leaves, shoots, and buds that can be found standing upright on their hind legs, using their extra-long necks to reach higher into the trees than most other plains game. Gerenuks have the unique ability to utilize the water found in the leaves and shoots they browse to meet their hydration requirements, allowing them to go without drinking water for an entire season or longer.
