About the Gelada Baboon (Theropithecus gelada)

The Gelada Baboon is the primate of the “Old World” monkey family, native to the mountain meadows of Ethiopia in northern Africa. This is the last known species of grazing primates and is also the world’s most terrestrial primates next to humans. They graze primarily on grasses and herbs found on the cliffs of the mountains. This primate has a large mane surrounding its face and a distinguishable red-shaped hourglass on its torso region. Male geladas are often large than females and have a cape-like coat on their back in a light to dark brown tone.
