About the Horny Toad (Phrynosoma spp.)
The Horned toad or Horned lizard gets its name from the spike-like structures found on the backside of its head. Unlike other spikes found on the body, the ones located behind the head are true horns meaning they are composed of bone. The genus name Phrynosoma translates to toad-bodied, explaining that this is actually a lizard resembling a toad. Of all the 15 U.S species, the most widespread and largest species is the Texas horned lizard. In fact, it is the mascot of a D1 collegiate university known as Texas Christian University (TCU).
